Summary:There are several reports that name several intersections in the city of Puyo as critical points, which record causes of accidents to generate statistical data. These reports show high accident rates due to vehicular speed in the urban area of the city of Puyo, which represents problem for road safety, even though it is considered a relatively small city. This research focuses on establishing strategies to reduce vehicular speed in the urban area with a high accident rate in the city of Puyo, determining the points of conflict where the greatest number of traffic accidents occur due to speed and the most optimal strategy to be applied. A documentary review of the records of several institutions in charge of collecting data on traffic accidents was carried out, complemented with a field study based on observation and data collection in situ, taking vehicle speeds at peak hours, generating a solid and reliable database. Based on the information acquired, it was found that speeding is one of the main causes of accidents on Alberto Zambrano Avenue in the city of Puyo during rush hour. In addition, it was found that the conditions of one of the main roads in the city of Puyo are not adequate for safe traffic due to the lack of both horizontal and vertical signage. With this information, appropriate strategies were established, considering the most efficient strategies to reduce vehicular speed that were applied in other cities in Ecuador and in other countries, proposed based on the needs at each intersection of the main roads of the city of Puyo to ensure safety, in support of speed management and user safety.
