Resumo:This research analyzes the relationship between External Sector and Economic Cycle in Ecuador, from 2002 to 2017. This study determines the external sector influence on Ecuadorian economy cyclical behavior. Exports, Imports, WTI international oil prices and the currency exchange rate were analyzed for External Sector. Then, a statistical approach allowed the researcher to determine the behavior of the variables during the study period. Hodrick and Prescott filter were applied to the real GDP of Ecuador. Additionally, a correlation between the External Sector and the Economic Cycle variables were analyzed where both of them evidenced a pro-cyclical behavior. Finally, there is a short and long term relationship between the external sector and the economic cycle. It could be evidenced by Vector Error Correction (VEC) model. The structure of the research is established by sections: In the first, second and third sections, the introduction, the basic problem of the research, and the proposed objectives are detailed. The fourth section is made up of the state of the art, where the background and the theoretical basis of the subject matter are objectively detailed. The fifth section shows the methodology used to carry out the research and obtain results. Finally, the sixth section, the conclusions and recommendations are appreciated
