| الملخص: | Introduction: Pediatric dentistry faces multiple challenges, among which the proper management of primary teeth stands out. The extraction of primary teeth before the time of their physiological exfoliation carries the risk of creating unfavorable spatial changes in the sagittal, transverse and vertical planes. Their study is essential to understand the long-term consequences and to develop appropriate preventive and therapeutic strategies. Objective: To analyze the consequences of premature extraction of primary molars and its implications in dentofacial development. Material and methods: The literature review was carried out in the databases PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar, based on the keyword “premature loss of primary teeth”. English and Spanish journals from the last 10 years were considered. Results: In total, 24 articles were selected for further analysis, of which 13 were based on longitudinal studies and 11 were cross-sectional studies. Conclusions: The implications of premature extraction of primary molars have a strong impact when dependent on several factors. Among the consequences are loss of dental harmony due to displacement of adjacent teeth; space closure in the dental arch; extrusion of the antagonist tooth and the frequency of sagittal, vertical and transversal problems. The possible interventions or treatments for this problem are the different types of space maintainers, however, it is recommended that each case should be evaluated individually. |
