Περίληψη:The present research work "Laterality in the process of reading and writing in children of the Educational Unit "Isabel de Godín" Riobamba", arose through observation in the pre-professional practices and dialogues with teachers, where it was evidenced that most of the students of second year of E.G. B presented difficulties in reading and writing. B presented difficulties in reading and writing, and that is why the main objective is to determine the laterality and the level of reading and writing of the students, because laterality is the dominance of one of the cerebral hemispheres, a very important basic function to be developed at early ages, mainly in early education prior to the beginning of the reading and writing process in order to prevent future learning difficulties. The methodology used was with quantitative approach, non-experimental design, descriptive level or scope, for the basic objectives, for the place of field and for the time it was transversal. The population was all the students of the "Isabel de Godín" Educational Unit, the sample was non-probabilistic and intentional and consisted of 80 students in the second year of E.G.B.; the evaluation instruments used for data collection were the Tale test designed to evaluate the levels of reading and writing, while the Harris test evaluates lateral dominance. The Excel statistical program was used to process the information. The results obtained showed that laterality is closely related to literacy, since there are students with an undefined lateral dominance and a medium level of literacy.
