| Izvleček: | Introduction: Sleep is a physiological process of great importance, so depriving it leads to cognitive difficulties that negatively affect physical and mental well-being. The objective of the study is to determine the effect of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance. Methodology: it is of a bibliographic type which is based on the search for scientific articles that contain the variables to be studied through the use of various databases such as; Scopus, Redalyc, Scielo, Google Academic, Proquest, ScienceDirect, Researchgate, Pubmed, Frontiers, the effect of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance will be described. An algorithm was used to search for the articles themselves that went through the “Critical Review Form-Quantitative Studies (CRF-QS)” instrument to measure the methodological quality of each article. Results 43 scientific articles were included in the study whose population was adolescents, adults, and older adults. The cause of sleep deprivation has been the demanding work hours carried out by nurses, guards, transporters, university students, among others, which range from 24 hours, bringing with it serious consequences at a cognitive level and putting both their own lives and those of others at risk. The lack of sleep is the main cause of poor cognitive performance, as well as other factors such as environmental and biological factors that have decreased cognitive performance. Studies have revealed that there is a significant relationship in which the cause of cognitive performance is sleep deprivation. Conclusions: lack of sleep due to long work hours has caused cognitive deterioration, mainly affecting attention and memory, causing medical errors and traffic accidents. |
