description ABSTRACT Ichthyosis is a disease of mostly genetic origin characterized by hyperkeratosis, desquamation, and fissures in the skin. Its general incidence is considered low; however, there has been an increase in the number of diagnosed cases in recent years. The objective of this research was to determine the characteristics of newborns with ichthyosis admitted to Servicio de Neonatología del Hospital Provincial General Docente de Riobamba during the period between January 2016 - December 2020. For this, essential, descriptive, and retrospective research was developed to determine the characteristics of newborns with a clinical diagnosis of ichthyosis. These elements are identified by reviewing medical records. The main results show 2.4% of the total of 1787 patients admitted to the service, with a predominance of gestational age at birth less than 36.6 weeks (72.09%) and low birth weight (60.46%). 41.86% of the cases presented low APGAR at 5 minutes. Dehydration of the skin (62.79%) was the most frequent manifestation, and the most common clinical form was ichthyosis Vulgaris (39.53%). In mothers, the age over 36 years (41.86%), indigenous (51.16%), rural origin (76.24%), and consanguinity (67.44%) predominated. It is concluded that there is a low percentage of patients with a clinical diagnosis of ichthyosis, in which prematurity, low birth weight, and parental consanguinity may constitute risk factors for the development of ichthyosis.
