Sumario:ABSTRACT: The present study characterized the differences in shape, length, and number of palatal rugae present in English Caucasian and Ecuadorian mixed-race male individuals. The population consisted of 100 dental impressions, from which, following a non-probabilistic sampling based on criteria, 67 plaster models were selected, of which 30 belonged to the mixed-race and 37 to the Caucasian ethnicity. A graphite pencil was used to delimit the roughness and the patterns were recorded according to Peñalver and Cormoy's classification. The diversity test allowed us to determine the differences between the plaster models studied and to carry out the discriminant function analysis, a procedure guided using SPSS version 27. Straight and curved rugae were more common in Caucasians, while sinuous, straight, and point shapes were more common in mixed-race. Angular, circle, and compound shapes showed low frequency in both groups. Differences between the distribution of accessory palatal rugae according to ethnicity were evident. Diversity analysis for the association between the number of palatal rugae showed a value of 0.85. Two rugae shapes - sinuous and compound A - contributed to the discriminant function that allowed identification of the population with an accuracy of 79.1%. There was a statistically significant association between palatal rugae shapes and ethnicity, the discriminant function allowed a moderate differentiation of the mixed-race population from the Caucasian population. Therefore, the study of palatal rugae allows for ethnic identification.
