Gaia:An orthodontic treatment is considered effective when achieving an aesthetic and functional smile, however, there are factors that make maintenance difficult at the dental level, known as the phenomenon of post-orthodontic relapse, that is, teeth returning to their initial position after finishing the treatment. This terminology is defined by authors as a significant problem in modern orthodontics. The objective of this bibliographic review is to evaluate the effectiveness of supracrestal fibrotomy in reducing post-orthodontic relapses through a systematic bibliographic review of previous studies. Once the PICO question was posed: Is supracrestal fibrotomy effective in reducing post-orthodontic relapses in relation to other methods, the analysis of 22 articles selected from the PubMed, Proquest, BVS and Dentistry and Oral Sciences Source and Science Direct databases was carried out; in accordance with the established criteria. The results indicate that fibrotomy is an excellent alternative to maintain the teeth in the position obtained with orthodontic treatment, evidencing results that demonstrate its effectiveness. However, for other authors it should be considered as a complementary therapy to the use of retainers.
