| Zusammenfassung: | In Ecuador, economic losses due to unaccounted water volumes caused by leaks reached 320 million dollars corresponding to a waste of 696.2 million m³ per year (Diario Primicias, 2021). This problem has been worsening over the years. Therefore, this research aims to determine the incidence of leaks in the drinking water supply networks of the Guano and Chambo cantons. To obtain the results, mixed methodology (quantitative and qualitative) will be applied, through data collection, field measurements, and inspections, for the development of the technical water balance, which will determine the percentage of leaked flow and yields and identify the most affected drinking water supply network, as well as the economic impact generated by leaks to the entities in charge of water control in each canton. The analysis of the results determined that the Guano canton's water supply system has an uncontrolled leakage rate of 50.79% and an overall system yield of 46.01%, with a rating of "Unacceptable," whose most affected network is "Lluishi. "In comparison, the drinking water supply system of Chambo has a percentage of the uncontrolled leaked flow of 75.75%, an overall yield of 23.26%, and a rating of "Unacceptable," with the most affected network being "Red 1". From the field visits, determined the efficiency of the operation and maintenance process of the potable water systems. Finally, developed an action plan to help the Potable Water Departments to reduce the levels of unaccounted-for water and improve the performance of their systems |
