Description
Summary:ABSTRACT: Introduction: Malnutrition continues as a major health problem during childhood worldwide. Triglyceride glucose indices have been studied as a predictor marker of several events, including diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance and cardiovascular events. Objective: To determine the correlation between triglyceride/glucose index and nutritional status in adolescents. Methods: Cross-sectional study, conducted in 140 adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age, attended at the outpatient clinic of the General Hospital Riobamba IESS, throughout 2021. Data were retrieved from individual medical records and from the patients themselves by physical examination. Results: The average age was 14.5 ± 1.9 years, 59.3% were female, and the average BMI was 26.2 ± 5.0 kg/m2. The distribution by nutritional status was: 4.3%, 39.3% and 56.4% for underweight, normal weight and obesity, respectively. Blood tests compared obese and non-obese were: blood glucose (84.7 vs 83.7 mg/dL), triglycerides (161.5 vs 136.6 mg/dL), total cholesterol (165.0 vs 162.3 mg/dL). Triglycerides/glucose index was slightly higher among obese (5.0 vs 4.9), but not significant (p = 0.08). Conclusions: A linear correlation was found between triglyceride glucose index with body mass index, hence with nutritional status.
