| Résumé: | The analysis of oxidative stress as an underlying mechanism in rheumatic diseases revealed the complexity of this phenomenon, which covers a wide range of aspects. This process has been identified as a central factor in the appearance and progression of various rheumatic diseases, which are characterized by chronic inflammation and an unbalanced immune response. The study carried out was basic, non-experimental and descriptive, with a qualitative approach and a crosssectional and retrospective design. To carry out this research, a non-systematic literature review was carried out using various search tools, such as PubMed, Scopus, Elsevier, Scielo and Redalyc, which allowed access to a wide variety of previously recorded information. This methodology provided a robust framework to explore and analyze the role of oxidative stress in rheumatic diseases, providing a comprehensive understanding of this important etiopathogenic mechanism. The focus of the literature review was on the last five years, conducting a qualitative analysis with a descriptive approach to closely examine the findings of each study and interpret the relationship between oxidative stress and these medical conditions. The results of the literature review reveal that oxidative stress arises as a result of the increase in reactive oxygen/nitrogen species and the decrease in the antioxidant capacity of the organism. This imbalance triggers a series of pathological processes, and its balance is represented as a scale where reactive oxygen species are counteracted by the body's antioxidant machinery. The review highlights the importance of oxidative stress in a variety of diseases, including rheumatic diseases, and underlines the need to better understand the mechanisms involved to develop more effective therapeutic strategies. Keywords: Rheumatic Diseases, Free Radicals, Antioxidants, Oxidative Stress. |
