| Izvleček: | The general objective of this research was to analyze the representation and effects of acculturation in the novel El Chulla Romero y Flores by Jorge Icaza. This novel stands out for its social realism style, in which profound process of forced acculturation is evident, reflecting the struggle of social classes, cultural imposition, loss of identity, and the injustices of Ecuadorian society at the time. The methodology used was qualitative. It was focused on a descriptive and documentary study, constituted of a corpus structured by the aforementioned work; the analytical-synthetic and hermeneutic methods and documentary and content analysis techniqueswereusedtoanalyzeandinterprettheinformation.Theresearchresultsdetermined that cultural imposition, discrimination, and loss of identity are consequences of acculturation, which are marked among the dissimilar social classes; these contrasts are reflected in existing economic, labor, political, and social inequalities. The interaction between cultures profoundly transforms societies since, when bringing together different traditions, customs, and values, bothbenefits, suchastheenrichmentofculturaldiversity, andnegativeconsequences, suchas tensionsandconflicts, canarise.Inthiscase, itisevidentinthesocialcontextthatacculturation can vigorously trigger discrimination, inequality of opportunities, and social fragmentation; all this can manifest itself in prejudices, stereotypes, and particular treatment towards people of different social statuses. |
