Summary:This research project seeks to analyze how the print media of Riobamba perform their journalistic work, in the political sphere and the public opinion of the population of the canton in the period August 2018-January 2019. The information issued by the newspapers is important for the development of the city especially in the political sphere, that is why it is essential to maintain a timely, truthful and objective sense of information. The research was based on the analysis of contents exposed in the newspapers La Prensa and Los Andes, and how the published information generates public opinion. The study population according to the formula applied was 266 respondents and 3 interviewees, who provide information on the criteria of the inhabitants and the position of the specialists about the information produced by the media. The applied resources, the structuralist and functionalist theory that affect the influence of printed media on citizenship in electoral politics, perform a quantitative and qualitative analysis of social behaviors in political information that in turn is based on the interpretation of the texts produced by the media, the reality expressed and the environment that predominates. Finally, a manual of coverage in the electoral politics is proposed to improve the handling of information attending to the needs and rights of the social actors, in order to democratically promote citizen participation and debate in political meetings.
