To fulfill this objective, during their training police candidates are exposed to constant situations of violence and disturbances, as well as prolonged work shifts that can affect the normal cycle of sleep and are linked to mental health problems, therefore, the present investigation aimed to determine the relationship between drowsiness and mental health problems in line police applicants from the Alausí and Chimbo Training Schools. The methodology used had a non-experimental cross-sectional design, bibliographic and field type, with a quantitative approach and a descriptive and correlational level, it was developed in a population of 85 applicants with a mean age of 23 years. For data collection, the instruments applied were: the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESE) and the Anxiety, Depression, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). The results show that 37.6% of the population presented excessive daytime sleepiness that ranged from mild to severe. Regarding mental health problems, anxiety predominates (17.7%), compared to depression (14.2%) and stress (13%). Regarding the relationship between sleepiness and mental health problems, it exhibits a very significant (p<0.1) positive correlation at a moderate level between the variables (anxiety, Rho=.466**; depression, Rho=.545**; stress, Rho=.565**), therefore, it is established that the greater the sleepiness, the greater the presence of mental health problems. In short, in the population studied, it denotes the presence of mental health problems, associated with various factors, among, which, excessive daytime sleepiness derived from work and academic demands stands out. Keywords: Line police, applicants, mental health, anxiety, depression, stress, sleepiness, excessive daytime sleepiness.
