Sumari:The use of micro-surfacing in road infrastructure is a widely adopted technique to improve surface friction and correct deformations in the pavement layer (Toscano, 2014). This research aimed to compare the physical, mechanical, and hydraulic characterization of old and new micro surfacing using an experimental approach that helps determine roadways' current condition and long-term performance in Riobamba City. A mixed-method approach was used to evaluate the characteristics of both old and new micro sur-facings, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Field studies included sample extraction and in-situ measurements, which were complemented by laboratory testing. These analyses examined the resistance and mechanical-hydraulic behavior of the micro-surfacing layers, enabling a detailed comparison of their surfaces. The results indicated that older micro-surfacing exhibit greater surface wear and higher infiltration rates. Furthermore, it was evident that these micro-surfacing were not applied according to current technical standards, as they were placed directly over a thin subbase layer or, in some cases, directly over the subgrade, without an adequate support structure, compromising their functionality and safety. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of micro-surfacing properties and support the region's sustainability and safety of road infrastructure.
