| Summary: | This research focused on comparing the effectiveness and sustainability of chambira dental floss, made from natural fiber from the Astrocaryum chambira palm, compared to conventional commercial dental floss. This study is part of Ecuador's Comprehensive Oral Health Program for the Waorani Nationality Research Project. Commercial floss is made of synthetic materials such as nylon and PTFE, which poses environmental problems due to its low biodegradability, contributing to the accumulation of non-recyclable plastic waste. On the contrary, chambira, an Amazonian fiber traditionally used by indigenous communities, is presented as an ecological and sustainable alternative. The study methodology included surveying 388 dentistry students to evaluate perceptions about the effectiveness, sustainability, and willingness to use natural dental floss. The results showed that 82% of participants would be willing to try chambira floss, and 59% would recommend it if it met their expectations. Its effectiveness in removing plaque and its low environmental impact were highlighted, contributing to reducing plastic waste and the carbon footprint. The analysis concluded that chambira floss can compete with commercial floss, standing out for its effectiveness and environmental benefits by reducing plastic waste and the carbon footprint. The product promotes economic and cultural sustainability in communities such as the Waorani, generating income and preserving traditions. Chambira floss is a sustainable option that improves oral health and reduces environmental impact. |
