| Резюме: | The present research entitled “ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT CAUSED BY MINING ACTIVITY ON WATER QUALITY OF THE ALAO RIVER, RIOBAMBA CANTON, CHIMBORAZO PROVINCE”, aimed to economically estimate the impact of mining activity on the water quality of the Alao River. Methodologically, the study began with the development of a baseline to determine the current situation of the area. Subsequently, mining activity was evaluated through the analysis of its impacts on the water resource. The willingness to pay for the conservation of this resource was economically valued, and the impact of mining activity was estimated. Surveys were applied to key stakeholders to obtain sociodemographic data and understand their perception of the study topic. Additionally, statistical analyses using ANOVA and Student's t-test were conducted to identify significant relationships between variables. The results showed that most respondents recognize the importance of ecosystem services, especially those related to resource provision and cultural services. However, only 34.9% expressed a willingness to pay for the conservation of these services. It is concluded that, although there is recognition of the benefits of ecosystem services, the willingness to pay is limited, highlighting the need to design more effective public policies. These policies could include educational programs, awareness campaigns, tax incentives, or subsidies for those participating in conservation activities, as well as the creation of a payment for ecosystem services system. Furthermore, it is essential to strengthen natural resource management to involve the population in the sustainable management of water resources. |
