| Riassunto: | Concrete foundations are in permanent contact with the soil, exposed to different environmental agents and chemical attacks of salts or sulfates, which give rise to pathologies such as cracking and loss of strength, leading to long-term structural failures. This non-experimental research with a quantitative approach aims to analyze the exposure of surface elements to chemical attack of sulfates (SO4), according to their concentration in the soil of the Penipe canton in the province of Chimborazo. For this purpose, laboratory tests were carried out on 50 specimens located using a grid-type survey with the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), applying test procedures based on the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM C1580-20) to determine the concentration of sulfates in the collected samples. According to the USCS classification, the Penipe canton is made up of fine and coarse soils with the following groups: silty sands (SM), low plasticity silts (ML), clayey sands (SC), and organic silts (OL). The highest concentration of sulfates based on the ranges established by the ECS (Ecuadorian Construction Standard) is between S1 or Moderate (42 samples) and S2 or Severe (8 samples) in areas related to the agricultural sector or near snow-capped mountains and volcanoes high values of natural humidity, water table or high annual rainfall. The severity of the sulfate concentration can be seen in the zoning map of the canton, which will allow the construction sector to prevent and protect future civil projects efficiently. |
