| Sumari: | ABSTRAC Senile cataract is an opacity of the lens caused and associated with advanced age. It is the most frequent and significant cause of preventable blindness in adults worldwide, and its prevalence has increased in parallel with the rising life expectancy of people. It affects visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and other visual functions, influencing the quality of life of individuals, even limiting their interaction with the environment. It is often associated with feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety. Technological and surgical advancements in its treatment have made it a manageable condition. However, deficiencies in diagnosis and treatment exist due to limited access and availability of visual health services in some countries. The objective of this study was to update knowledge related to the diagnosis and therapeutic approach to cataracts in older adults, as well as the changes after the surgical procedure. A systematic literature review was conducted using databases such as SCiELO, PubMed, and Scopus, including documents from 2011 to 2021. The results indicate that visual function improves post-surgery, leading to an enhanced quality of life. However, comorbidities and factors associated with longer surgical procedures can affect outcomes, potentially resulting in low vision even after the surgical intervention. |
