Análisis de la “Defensa de los Curas de Riobamba”, frente a los derechos del indígena 1786 - 1787

The purpose of the project called "Defensa de Los curas de Riobamba” against the rights of the indigenous, 1786-1787,” is to analyze the Spanish laws in force in 1787, as well as the influence of the Enlightenment on the thought of Eugenio Espejo, during the conflict found between creoles and religious. The context of the research starts from the description of the famous festivals celebrated in the Royal Audience of Quito, in the Riobamba council. They were allowing one of the defensive positions to be interpreted, also seen as a reason for criticism for the Creoles, who demonstrate their disagreement with the accusations against the religious. The study reveals the rights of the indigenous people, the social tensions between the Riobamba elite, and their economic, legal, and political situation. The methodology used is qualitative, and the historical method, the primary source handled, was the facsimile of the allegation, discussed through secondary sources worked from the categories: social, economic, and political. The study revealed the tensions between the local power groups, facing the manipulation of the abandoned class, the indigenous people, who lived in a scenario of poverty, visualizing the interest of the ruling class, however, Eugenio Espejo influenced by the European illustration evidences his disagreement with the regime of the time.
