Özet:This research, entitled Reading Habits and the Development of Critical Thinking in Upper Elementary School Students, examines reading practices and their relationship to the development of critical thinking across various topics. The objective of the research was to analyze reading habits and the development of critical thinking in ninth-grade students at the Fe y Alegría Elementary School in Riobamba. This research used a quantitative approach with a non- experimental design, as the variables were not deliberately manipulated. In terms of level or scope, it was descriptive, focusing on the characteristics and profiles of individuals, groups, and communities. In terms of timing, it was cross-sectional, conducted during the 2024-2025 school year. In terms of objectives, the research was basic because it identified facts and phenomena as they occur in reality; in terms of location, it was field research, given that it was carried out at the educational institution mentioned above; the sample selected was non-probabilistic and intentional, consisting of ninth-grade students from that institution. Regarding data collection techniques and instruments, a survey was conducted, with a questionnaire divided into two sections. The first section contained 13 structured questions on reading habits, while the second section contained 9 questions on critical thinking. It was concluded that students have a low reading level, which significantly influences the development of critical thinking. When they stated they have no interest in reading, this was reflected in their interpretations of texts, which were inappropriate. This was due to factors such as reading preferences and hours spent reading, among others. Finally, some recommendations were proposed to remedy the problem detected, such as creating spaces for oral interaction, the use of reading strategies according to age, and the development of argumentation of ideas in relation to personal points of view, as well as the intervention of technology with the use of audiobooks and interactive programs.
