| Sumari: | Hard water is one of the quality parameters for water to human consumption, values higher than 300 mg / L considered very hard. The water of Riobamba has an average of the hardness of 336.86 mg / L, whose value can cause changes in the taste threshold of the liquid and inlays in pipes of all types of systems. In this sense, the present investigation aimed at evaluating the efficiency of the adsorption process using activated beds of volcanic rocks from Chimborazo and Tungurahua in the reduction of the hardness of the water. To this end, absorption beds made from volcanic material used as an absorbent material for the activating solutions. Subsequently, from synthetic water with a concentration of 400 ppm of CaCO3, the water was filtered through columns using the beds were activated to enhance the removal of hardness of the water. Consequently, tests of regeneration of the beds were carried out to determine the efficiency of reactivation in the total hardness removal and based on the results obtained, the best acidic and basic activating solution was selected, and finally a test of reduction in natural water. The main results show that the activation of beds (volcanic rocks) from the Chimborazo and Tungurahua, have higher efficiency with the activating solution of pH 11.5, with values that go of 76% and 24.3% respectively. |
