Özet:Caries is a highly prevalent chronic disease among children. It is multifactorial and can be associated with iron deficiency anemia, which, like caries, is widely recognized as a global public health problem with potentially severe consequences. Given this background, the literature review aims to analyze the relationship between iron deficiency anemia and early childhood caries, as well as the characteristics of anemia that may contribute to the development of caries. Scientific documents related to dentistry were systematically from databases such as PubMed, ProQuest, and Google Scholar. These resulted in 13 scientific articles on caries and iron deficiency anemia published in the last five years. The results showed that 76% of the authors establish that there is a relationship between these two pathologies, in contrast to 24% who consider that more studies should be done to establish a relationship between these two variables; it is also mentioned that iron deficiency anemia can develop early childhood caries due to low innate immunity and decreased pH in the oral cavity, causing pathological damage to the enamel. In conclusion, there is a relationship between iron deficiency anemia and early childhood caries due to the triggering factors that anemia causes in the oral cavity. A bidirectional relationship is observed, where caries can also trigger iron deficiency anemia.
