Resumo:The present study was carried out with the purpose of evaluating five toothpastes indicated for pediatric age for bacterial control through the inhibition of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, this research was observational, descriptive and cross-sectional. Fifty Petri dishes were prepared with blood agar for the experimental units and an extra one for the growth of the strain, then the microorganism was inoculated in the Petri dishes, different 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16 and 1:32 solutions of the five dentifrices were prepared, which were embedded in sterile disks and placed in each plate together with the positive control (penicillin) and the negative control (distilled water), consecutively placed in the incubator at 36ºC for 48 hours. The results showed the antibacterial efficacy of each dentifrice, based on specific data of the inhibitory halos, it was observed that the 1:2 solution showed important variants in the inhibition value, unlike the other solutions, it was also observed that the Blendax Kids and Blendy Cool paste were the most effective with values of 12. 20 mm and 12.10 mm, while Colgate Zero paste obtained lower inhibition with 10.40 mm, none of the dentifrices for infants equaled the effectiveness of the positive control, besides the fluoride content did not reveal the antibacterial efficacy because it could possibly be altered by other components. It was demonstrated that there were statistically significant differences between the inhibitory values shown between the toothpastes evaluated (p= 0.001). Keywords: Bacterial control, Streptococcus mutans, toothpastes, inhibition, antibacterial, fluoride.
