Čoahkkáigeassu:The research was conducted in Riobamba to know parameters such as quantity and characteristics of the usable plastic waste in the different concentration points. Files and documents issued by the municipality of Riobamba were used, such as PDOT 2020 – 2030 and the Revenue Emission Report document, thanks to which it was possible to extract fundamental data to meet the objectives set. In the “Development and Territorial Planning Plan 2020 – 2030” exposed by the Municipality of Riobamba, it indicates that 180,000 kg of urban solid waste is collected, of which 10.82% correspond to plastics, approximately 19,476 kg/day, that is, 584,280 kg/month. From what one might expect, this amount to be usable; however, it is not. In Riobamba, 13 recyclers are operating. To know the modus operandi of these, we visited them in situ and interviewed the establishments’ owners and administrator. After obtaining the information from reliable and updated sources, it is observed that the amount they collect together is 243,985.13 kg/month, approximately half of what is organized by the municipality; that is, 58% of plastic waste is being wasted. In addition, from the information obtained, it is known that NTE ININ 2634:2012 does not apply, which establishes a classification of plastics based on the resins with which they are manufactured. Rather, they store the plastic that reaches them in three groups: fine, thick and PET. Finally, four use alternatives that contribute to the community were proposed; among them are the possibilities of obtaining fuels by pyrolysis, the construction of ecological blocks, the elaboration of plastics membranes for agriculture, and the obtaining of polyester threads from PET, each of them contributing positively in the energy, economic and ecological fields.
