| Summary: | The human papillomavirus (HPV) is considered a worldwide, sexually transmitted disease associated with cervical cancer. Objective: determine the prevalence of infection by high-risk HPV in women of childbearing age treated at the IESS General Hospital in Riobamba during 2019. Materials and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study carried out at the IESS General Hospital in Riobamba in January December 2019; 279 medical records of women who underwent the examination for the detection of HPV were reviewed; help of the AS400 System, the data analysis was carried out in the statistical package SPSS v. 24,0; Measures of central tendency and dispersion were used, the chi- square value was calculated with 95% confidence. Results: The prevalence of HPV infection was 32.6%. 91.4% of the sample are mestizo, 87% live in urban areas, and medium economic levels (86%); 52.7% are young, married, and multiparous adults with secondary and higher education who began their sexual life before of 20. The most frequent AR-HPV found was HVP 16 (8.6%) and HVP 18 (1.1) related to sexual intercourse from 16. Conclusions: the early initiation of sexual intercourse, low educational, economic level, and parity is the relationship between high-risk HPV. |
