Influencia de diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en pacientes con periodontitis crónica

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM 2) is a metabolic disease associated with a deficit in the secretion of insulin or its low effect on tissues which generates elevated levels of glucose in the blood, this in the long term causes both macrovascular and microvascular complications, including damage at the periodontal level. This research project sought to analyze the influence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in patients with chronic periodontitis. A descriptive, correlational, mixed approach and cross-sectional study was carried out. The observation technique was applied for data collection and a checklist was used as an instrument. The population under study consisted of an intentional non-probabilistic sample based on the selection criteria with a total of 40 data records corresponding to diabetic and non-diabetic patients proportionally. The sample was processed in the SPSS v.25 statistical program. The results were: a high prevalence in chronic, moderate and severe periodontitis in diabetic patients while in healthy patients the mild level was the most frequent; the severity of bone loss in diabetic patients was 40% for mild, 31% for moderate and 23% for severe, the vertical pattern exceeded the horizontal with 62% and 36% respectively and the analysis of the high percentages of glycosylated hemoglobin was directly proportional to the distribution of generalized bone loss. A statistical significance (p=0.001) was established between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and the severity of chronic periodontitis.
