Tanning as an economic activity generates job opportunities as well as boosts the economy of the country. At the national level, the process of leather tanning results out of two methods. The use of chromium salts and vegetable agents, from which wastewater containing toxic chemical components with a high content of bioburden is derived, and therefore, it is crucial to provide an adequate treatment system. This research aimed to study the productive processes of the leather tanning industry that are applied in Ecuador and determine which would be the most suitable basic treatment system for this sector, according to the average characteristics of the generated effluents. To achieve the aim of this study, bibliographic research was carried out supported by scientific databases, which allowed estimating the levels of contamination of the wastewater of the national tanneries and proposing a purification system based on primary and secondary treatment stages. Effectiveness was verified with the application of theoretical performance balances. The exposed procedure shows that all tanneries can apply treatments according to their production processes and their residuals. It is essential in this type of effluents to maintain control of the pre-treatment and use it separately to the two main production lines: tanning and peeling |

It is essential in this type of effluents to maintain control of the pre-treatment and use it separately to the two main production lines: tanning and peelingEs considerado curtido al proceso de transformación de la piel de los animales (bovino, porcino y ovino) en un producto terminado que es el cuero, la actividad económica genera oportunidades de trabajo como también dinamiza la economía del país, a nivel nacional el proceso de curtido de la piel es posible mediante dos métodos, el uso de sales de cromo y de agentes vegetales, de los cuales se derivan aguas residuales que contienen componentes químicos tóxicos con alto contenido de carga biológica, y por lo tanto, es importante proveer un adecuado sistema de tratamiento. El objetivo de esta investigación fue estudiar los procesos productivos de la industria del curtido de la piel que se aplican en el Ecuador y determinar cuál sería el sistema de tratamiento básico más adecuado para este sector, según las características promedio de los efluentes generados. Para lo cual, se realizó una investigación de tipo bibliográfico apoyada en bases de datos científicas, que permitieron estimar los niveles de contaminación de las aguas residuales de las curtiembres nacionales y de esta manera proponer un sistema de depuración basado en etapas primarias y secundarias de tratamiento que se comprobó su eficacia con la aplicación de balances de rendimientos teóricos.
