Crynodeb:: Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease that mostly affects adolescents and young adults. Its main clinical manifestation is the presence of dermatological lesions that can cause residual reactions affecting the psychological sphere of the patient, reducing their perception of quality of life related to health. Self-medication is a habit usually used by affected patients, this in order to improve the physical appearance that often is deteriorated due to acne. Objectives: to determine the incidence of self-medication in patients diagnosed with acné between 14 and 24 years of age who attend a dermatology outpatient in Hospital Provincial General Docente de Riobamba. Material and Methods: descriptive, cross-sectional study in 200 patients diagnosed with acne. It was determined the sociodemographic characteristics of patients with this diagnosis, the incidence of self-medication and the factors that influence to adopt this practice, among others. Results: Mean age of 17.03 ± 2.97 years, with a predominance of patients between 17 and 20 years old (58.50%). Majority of male patients (60.50%) and urban origin (53.50%). There was 59.50% of patients with acne who self-medicate. Conclusions: There is a high incidence of self-medication in patients with acne, the influence of the surrounding environment and physical discomfort were the most determining factors in the decision to self-medicate.
