| Summary: | The main objective of this research study was to identify risk factors for hypothyroidism in health professionals in the workplace. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the biological activity of thyroid hormones is diminished causing resistance in tissues, problems in their hormonal secretion, or alterations in metabolism; it is estimated that around 300 million people worldwide suffer from some disorder related to the malfunctioning of the thyroid gland. The frequency of clinical hypothyroidism ranges from 0.1% to 2%, while subclinical hypothyroidism affects 4% to 10% of adults with a higher incidence in women. With the support of the Google Scholar meta-search engine and after a critical analysis, descriptive- qualitative research was conducted and a sample of 110 bibliographic references published in major databases such as PubMed, Dialnet, Redalyc, SciELO, ProQuest, Elsevier, between 2018 to 2023 was obtained. In conclusion, it was identified that among the main risk factors for hypothyroidism in the workplace are: exposure to ionizing radiation, age between 40 and 60 years, higher prevalence in women, high TSH levels, insufficient iodine intake, endocrine disruptors, use and handling of drugs (amiodarone, lithium and cytostatics), among others; it was established that hypothyroidism is closely linked to metabolic syndrome (MS). The research also allowed proposing nursing care focused on the promotion and prevention of the main risk factors to which health professionals are constantly exposed to develop hypothyroidism. |
