Cambios climáticos y saberes ancestrales: Estudio de caso en la parroquia rural de San Juan

This research examines the impact of climate change on the indigenous community of Guabug, located in the San Juan Parish of Riobamba Canton, and its relationship with the preservation of ancestral knowledge for environmental adaptation. Using a mixed-methods approach, various techniques were implemented, including participatory mapping, surveys, interviews, and participant observation, in collaboration with eighth-, ninth-, and tenth-grade students from the Unidad Educativa Interandina, teachers, key stakeholders in the agricultural sector, and the president of the San Juan parish. These tools helped identify issues such as droughts, soil erosion, and shifts in rainfall patterns, which have negatively affected both agricultural production and the community’s traditional practices. The study revealed that biodiversity loss and modernization have hindered the intergenerational transmission of ancestral knowledge on sustainable natural resource management. Despite this, the community retains adaptive strategies that, unfortunately, risk disappearing without proper documentation and transmission. As a significant contribution to this research, an informational booklet was developed to highlight the importance of ancestral knowledge. This booklet not only documents traditional techniques and community experiences but also serves as an educational tool to promote the preservation and transmission of this knowledge to future generations. In conclusion, the findings underscore the importance of integrating these practices into educational and community programs to enhance climate resilience and preserve Guabug’s cultural identity.
