Description
Summary:The Santa Rosa Industrial Area, located in the Ambato Canton, Tungurahua Province, is experiencing remarkable industrial growth. This increase in industrial activity has raised concerns regarding air quality, specifically about the concentration of sedimentable particulate matter (SPM). Therefore, this research aims to determine the concentration of sedimentable particulate matter in the Santa Rosa Industrial Park, Ambato Canton, Tungurahua province. Twenty sampling points were strategically established throughout the study area, evenly distributed to cover the points of greatest impact; the monitoring stations were located based on the wind direction. The passive gravimetric method determined the amount of sedimentable particulate matter. This method consists of placing Petri dishes with previously dried filter paper, weighing and determining their area at each sampling point over a period of 30 days (March - April 2024) to carry out the morphological and molecular analysis subsequently. In addition, the Geographic Information System (GIS) software was used to create the dispersion map of sedimentable particulate matter using the KRIGING interpolation tool, which used data on MPS concentrations, wind speed, and direction. The results obtained indicate that sampling points 3 (0.6269 mg/cm2/month), 4 (0.6053 mg/cm2 /month), 11 (0.6413 mg/cm2 /month) and 19 (0.8377 mg/cm2 /month) present concentration values that exceed the maximum permissible limits established by the WHO (0.5 mg/cm2 /month), while the minimum concentration recorded was point 6 (0.11 mg/cm2/month), with all concentrations being within the permitted range of Ministerial Agreement 097-A. Regarding the morphological and molecular analysis of the sample, it indicates that the observed particle has irregular and rectangular shapes; the chemical composition shows the presence of a variety of elements such as O, Si, Al, Na, Fe, Ca, K, Mg and Ba of anthropogenic and natural origin, where the main sources of emission are vehicular traffic, construction works, and industrial activities. Finally, the geostatistical study of MPS shows a dispersion in a southwesterly direction.
