Summary:ABSTRACT Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) is an educational model applied in the teaching process of the indigenous peoples and nationalities from Ecuador, its mission is to adapt the educational methodology to the idiosyncrasies of its beneficiaries and revitalize their language and culture. Despite the numerous textual bodies that govern the IBE, its development has represented a challenge for educational institutions and their actors due to the complexity involved in the combination of its elements. In this context, one of the most sensitive and difficult topics to work on is the teaching of Spanish as a component of the Language and Literature subject, because it is necessary to apply a non-homogenizing and efficient teaching methodology to achieve the learning of Spanish as the second language of the students. The research`s objective is to develop a pedagogical guide with an intercultural approach to promote the teaching of Spanish as part of the Language and Literature subject, for this purpose it begins by diagnosing and characterizing this process and determining its relationship with IBE. We worked with a sample formed by twenty students of the seventh year of Basic General Education of the Center for Intercultural Bilingual Education "Juan Francisco Yerovi", their representatives and the teacher of the subject. This is a field and not experimental research, its approach is mixed (qualitative and quantitative), two types of questionnaires and an interview were applied. A deductive model was used, and a propositional level was reached. The results indicate that the teaching of Spanish, as part of the Language and Literature subject, focuses mainly on formal aspects of the language and leaves informal activities aside. Pragmatic competence (especially intonation and communication skills in informal settings) and reading were found to be deficient. Finally, it was identified that the education offered in the center is partially adapted to IBE. Keywords: Intercultural Bilingual Education, Language and Literature, Spanish, pedagogical guide.
