Summary:This research project entitled "Determination of the degree of knowledge of oral hygiene of providers of patients with mental disabilities at the Provincial General Teaching Hospital of Riobamba, aims to relate the degree of knowledge of providers about oral hygiene and the index Of simplified oral hygiene for patients with mental disabilities. Patients with disabilities are people who are more likely to contract oral health problems due to poor dental hygiene, which causes bacterial plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation, tooth decay and periodontal disease, requiring additional help from other people to achieve and (1) The research methodology is descriptive and observational was carried out by means of a survey validated by Cronbach's Alpha, which was applied to the providers and observation of dental hygiene was performed for patients with mental disabilities. The results obtained were that providers who had secondary school education with a regular degree of knowledge and those with higher education had a good to regular knowledge, but the simplified oral hygiene index of mentally handicapped patients is poor. The recommendation to the Provincial General Teaching Hospital of Riobamba, which considered promoting promotion and prevention programs in providers of patients with special abilities, in order to educate and create habits that improve the oral state of patients with special abilities and in such a way to motivate the dental hygiene
