Summary:The water of the Chibunga River represents a renewable natural resource that is considered of great importance for the sustainable development of the Riobamba society; however, for several years it has been seriously polluted by human activities, which puts the lives of living beings, the environment and the people around it at risk. Unfortunately, this river is on the list of the most polluted in Zone 3 of Ecuador, the main cause being the location of its banks near the Cemento Chimborazo company; Despite this, its waters are used for irrigation of crops, agricultural areas, livestock, among others. According to various investigations carried out regarding the contamination of the Chibunga River, it has been established that the main affected areas are the Gatazo community, the Chibunga Lineal Park, the San Luis parish, and the discharge sector from the Chibunga River to the Chambo River, where evidences alteration of the quality of the water mainly by fecal coliforms, dissolved oxygen, fats, oils, and detergents, which seriously undermines the rights of good living of the inhabitants of the Riobamba canton, especially in terms of the rights to water, to the food, healthy environment and health.
