Adicionar Tag | Resumo: | ABSTRAC The purpose of the present investigation was focused on determining the clinical usefulness of activated charcoal in dentistry, with the main objective of evaluating its effectiveness as a dental lightening agent by means of literature reports. The study was carried out through a review of several scientific articles from the last 10 years, by compiling publications in relevant scientific databases such as ScienceDirect, PubMed and Elsevier, and a total of 51 scientific articles were compiled for the systematic review process that met an acceptable impact factor per journal in which they were published. The analysis of the scientific papers showed evidence of the effectiveness of this material in 25% of the total number of cases analyzed, demonstrating that it is not a viable alternative to be used as a lightening agent; it should be noted that this percentage was at the expense of a change in the dental structure due to the abrasive properties of the activated charcoal. The lack of clinical studies that provide reliable and trustworthy scientific evidence on the benefits and, at the same time, on the harm of this material was recognized as a limitation. Finally, it is proposed to students and professionals in dentistry to broaden their knowledge on the subject and thus be a reliable guide for the society blinded by misleading marketing so that they can acquire oral hygiene products that truly provide them with benefits both in the short and long term.
