| Summary: | Water hardness is a common problem affecting the quality of various water sources. Therefore, this research project aims to design and validate a filter using eggshells and barley hulls as adsorbent material to reduce the hardness present in the drinking water of the city of Riobamba. Based on a literature review, the following preparation methods were used: The barley hulls were washed with distilled water and then dried in a BOV-VF forced-air drying oven at 90°C for 15 hours. Next, the barley hulls were ground in a low-hopper, cast iron manual grain mill. The resulting material was then sieved using a BIOBASE BK-TS200 sieve, obtaining a particle size < 850 microns that I obtained an efficiency of 18%, despite having a higher efficiency than the other filter prototypes, the percentage is low compared to other materials, therefore it is suggested to continue with more experimental studies of these organic materials to find the appropriate method to improve the efficiency in removing water hardness. |
