Description
Summary:In Ecuador, factors such as population growth, motorization, social, technical, and geographical aspects are contributing to the increasing problem of traffic congestion. Due to these factors, the aim is to determine the causes of traffic congestion in the Bypass and Media Luna sectors of Riobamba city. A manual traffic count is being conducted to obtain the peak volumes, current average daily traffic (TPDAACTUAL), and future average daily traffic (TPDAFUTURO). Additionally, surveys were carried out to identify the hours and routes with the highest congestion, along with their underlying causes. A qualitative method was employed to gather information, while a quantitative approach was used to determine current and future traffic conditions. The traffic data was collected through manual traffic counts, revealing that the Media Luna sector experiences the highest traffic congestion. Based on the road classification system (MTOP), the analyzed roads should be classified as Class I, R-I, or R-II in the future. Furthermore, the surveys conducted in the study areas indicated that the peak congestion hours are from 06:30 to 07:15 in the morning and from 18:30 to 19:30 in the evening. The main causes identified include the presence of buses and a lack of attention from relevant authorities. To prevent traffic congestion, it is recommended to create designated spaces for different types of buses, enhance control measures implemented by competent authorities, and construct channelization at intersections.
