| Shrnutí: | This research analyzes visual communication systems in protected areas of Ecuador, using Sangay National Park as a case study. This natural area, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, faces challenges in terms of signage, visual accessibility, and message interpretation by both national and international tourists. The main objective was to diagnose the functionality of the park’s signage system and its ability to convey clear, accessible, and inclusive information. The study aimed to propose improvements based on principles of graphic design, universal accessibility, and adaptation to the natural and sociocultural environment. The methodology adopted a qualitative approach, applying tools such as semi-structured interviews with experts (park rangers, photographers, and technicians), observation sheets for existing signage, and ethnographic guidelines aimed at visitors. From the thematic analysis of the responses and observations, key categories were identified: signage, environment, regulations, user experience, and inclusion. The results reveal a deficient signage system, with lack of maintenance, poor placement, low visibility, and limited adaptation to the climatic and topographic conditions. Furthermore, a lack of linguistic inclusion (Kichwa, English) and accessibility for people with disabilities was noted. Despite having some informational elements, they are insufficient to ensure proper orientation and visitors’ safety. A redesign of the signage system is recommended, incorporating Andean cultural elements, improvements in weather-resistant materials, and inclusive strategies such as braille and pictograms. |
