Итог:Introduction: Senile dementia is a neurodegenerative disease, which can present as cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease. These diseases generate the loss of cognitive functions, reducing the frequency and adequate execution of oral care and hygiene, resulting in a negative impact on oral health. Aim: To analyze the relationship between senile dementia and oral health status in older adults through a systematic review and thereby provide information on the way in which this neurological disease affects oral health. Materials and methods: A qualitative approach methodology, exploratory and descriptive, was used, which made use of the documentary method for the collection of scientific articles, with the study tools being the online databases PubMed, ScienceDirect and LILACS. Results: As an initial result, a total of 95 scientific articles were collected, which were subjected to a discard and selection process, where only 11 valid articles were selected for the research. It was determined that there is a relationship between senile dementia and the development of oral diseases (cavities, periodontal disease and tooth loss). Conclusions: It is concluded that there is a bidirectional relationship between senile dementia (cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's) and oral health, since on the one hand the deterioration of cognitive function influences oral hygiene care, increasing the risk of developing oral diseases, while the presence of oral diseases such as periodontal disease generates an inflammatory process that can accelerate the development of neurodegenerative diseases.
