| الملخص: | Introduction: Periodontal disease is the sixth most common condition in humans, affecting up to 50% of the global population. It is defined as a chronic, multifactorial, infectious inflammatory condition that may be associated with cardiovascular disease. Objective: To determine the impact of periodontitis on the progression and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases through a bibliographic review. Methods: This review employed a qualitative, analytical, and descriptive approach, using a non-experimental bibliographic method to analyze and summarize information from scientific articles in databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Wiley. Results: A total of 344 scientific articles were initially identified, but after a screening process, only 12 were selected as valid for the investigation. The study found that there is a relationship between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease, with periodontitis increasing cardiovascular risk by 2.3 times, hypertension risk by 2.22 times, and an increase in proximal plaque index leading to a higher risk of heart attack. Moreover, periodontitis promotes a higher risk of major adverse cardiovascular events. Conclusions: Periodontitis has a significant impact on the progression and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. The more severe the periodontitis, the greater the risk of developing cardiovascular problems. |
