A brain abscess is an infection characterized by the accumulation of purulent material within the brain parenchyma surrounded by a pseudocapsule and behaves clinically as an intracranial mass. Its etiology is related to multiple risk factors such as infectious endocarditis, immunosuppression, dental...

| description | A brain abscess is an infection characterized by the accumulation of purulent material within the brain parenchyma surrounded by a pseudocapsule and behaves clinically as an intracranial mass. Its etiology is related to multiple risk factors such as infectious endocarditis, immunosuppression, dental infection foci, sinusitis, and otitis. Objective: to describe a clinical case of brain abscess and the risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, and treatment used in the patient, emphasizing the importance of timely evaluation and therapy. Methods: a qualitative, observational, descriptive study of a clinical case was conducted through scientific observation and research of articles. Results: The clinical case of a 43-year-old female patient who presented with moderate headache in the left frontotemporal region, accompanied by projectile vomiting, asthenia, and severe pain in the upper left third molar, where severe periodontal disease was evident, was described. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a left posterior temporal cystic lesion. Drug treatment was initiated but proved ineffective, so a craniotomy and capsulectomy with abscess evacuation were performed under ultrasound guidance. Conclusions: This study provided insight into brain abscesses and the considerable risk of mortality if they are not diagnosed in a timely manner. However, the clinical diagnosis must be corroborated by imaging, and in this entity, the identification of risk factors, prevention, treatment, and control are of vital importance in primary health care. |
