Estrategias educativas sobre cuidados paliativos en los pacientes adultos mayores del Centro de Salud de Tabacundo

This project and research was carried out at the Tabacundo Health Center in the province of Pichincha, Pedro Moncayo canton, where there is evidence of a high prevalence of older adults who need palliative care to improve their quality of life. Therefore, the general objective was to develop educational strategies that contribute to the improvement of palliative care in older adult patients in said health center. To this end, qualitative and quantitative methods were used, along with applied research, action research, field research, descriptive research, and bibliography, inductive-deductive and systemic methods. Surveys were conducted with the 15 older adults included in this study, as well as 15 caregivers responsible for their health. This allowed us to determine their level of knowledge and data regarding the topic of study. Furthermore, the inclusion of palliative care for older adults was promoted and end-of-life care improved. Much of the evidence shows that older adults suffer unnecessarily due to a widespread underestimation of their problems and a lack of access to palliative care services. Older adults have many unmet needs, experience multiple problems and disabilities, and require more complex treatments and social care.This increases the challenges for their families and the professionals who care for them. High-quality care, consistent with the standards currently provided by various palliative care institutions and services, and new policies and methods for improving care must reach and influence the experiences older adults experience in hospitals, their own homes, nursing homes, and nursing homes.
