Summary:Caries is one of the most common diseases in the oral cavity, the different preventive methods that protect the integrity of the teeth are diverse; therefore, evolving mechanisms that facilitate this purpose as a cariostatic agent is one of the objectives of slow-release fluoride devices. Due to its mechanism of action, where a glass-copolymer bead is bonded to the tooth, it has been considered as a long-range alternative. Objective: To demonstrate the effectiveness of fluoride-releasing "glass bead" devices as a preventive treatment for new carious lesions. Methodology: We searched for scientific articles, literature reviews and clinical studies in search platforms such as PubMed, ElSevier, Cochrane and Scielo. The articles were selected using algorithms that allowed the search criteria to be met, which had the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA) review method. Results: From the 52 articles with information on slow-release fluoride devices, the relevant information for this study resulted in 10 selected studies. Conclusions: Slow-release fluoride devices demonstrated their effectiveness as a caries preventive treatment due to their remineralising action on dental tissue, being an excellent alternative as a preventive agent for carious lesions, with a targeted approach to the most vulnerable or sectorised population in places with a high caries index.
