description The increase of bacterial resistance to different antimicrobial drugs is a fact that has shocked the scientific community in recent years, so the use of certain medicinal plants popularly known for their usefulness in the treatment of some infections is a potential therapeutic alternative and a possible solution to this problem, that is why this research aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity “in vitro” of the hydroethanolic extract of Origanum majorana leaves against Proteus spp; For which it was developed in three stages, a first one to obtain the extract by the maceration method with hydroalcoholic solution with subsequent simple distillation without reflux to eliminate the alcohol and evaluation of the quality of the extract through organoleptic and physicochemical parameters, a second one for its phytochemical characterization by qualitative identification methods and a third stage for the antimicrobial evaluation “in vitro” by the method of disc diffusion. The results obtained were an extract of Origanum majorana L with the required quality and a composition of active metabolites that justify a potential antimicrobial activity: phenolic compounds and/or tannins, flavonoids, triterpenes and/or steroids and saponins. The extracts at different concentrations showed antimicrobial activity against Proteus spp.; the inhibition percentages were significantly higher in the extracts at 75% and 100%, the latter being comparable to the antimicrobial activity of ciprofloxacin.
