Summary:The kidney plays a very important role in the maintenance of the animal organism, as the years go by there is a progressive deterioration that together with diseases and other factors alter its normal functioning. The purpose of the work was to evaluate the structure and renal function of geriatric dogs, through blood and urine tests and a bilateral ultrasound study, in 41 geriatrician patients who came to consultation at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital "César Augusto Guerrero" of the National University of Loja during the period November 2019 - January 2020. The results revealed 15 canines with hypertension (36.6%), of which 8 patients (53.3%) with alterations in their renal structure and 2 patients (13, 3%) with impaired kidney function. The variables were estimated as associated factors: sex, race, presumptive diagnosis, weight, diet, previous treatment and chronic disease. The Chi square goodness test was used in the statistical part, considering p values lower than 0.05 as statistically significant. The results indicate that there is no statistically significant estimate of factors associated with altered kidney structure and function. Of the 15 patients under study and when staging them according to the IRIS (International Renal Interest Society) scale, the result was, in category 1 to 13 patients (86.6%), in category 3 to 1 patient (6, 7%) and in category 4 to 1 patient (6.7%). 05 as statistically significant.
