Summary:Self-medication involves the consumption of medications without proper diagnosis of the disease and the corresponding prescription plus supervision of treatment by trained personnel. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics associated with self-medication in nursing students at the National University of Loja, as well as the sociodemographic characterization, signs and symptoms for which they resorted to self-medication, the types of drugs most used, the reasons and place of acquisition of medicines. The study covered a population of 99 students, a quantitative approach was used with a descriptive and crosssectional design, as an instrument the informed consent and the questionnaire to measure selfmedication of university students (CAuM-ovr) where the following results were obtained: 97.05% of nursing students at the National University of Loja resort to self-medication, 74.74% due to pain, 61.61% due to flu, and 48.48% due to fever. The most consumed drugs are overthe-counter and belong to the group of analgesics/anti-inflammatory drugs 79.7%, followed by anti-flu drugs 43.43%. The main reasons why they resorted to self-medication were that it was not considered necessary to go to the doctor 62.62%, and economic reasons 59.59%, as the main source of obtaining medications without a medical prescription are pharmacies 88.8%. In conclusion, we have that the incidence of self-medication in nursing students is high and there are many factors associated with this practice, whether sociodemographic, economic or social
