Nevertheless, it can cause complications like maxillary osteonecrosis characterized by exposure of necrotic bone tissue, that develops in patients who have received invasive dental treatmens that involve bone manipulation. In this bibliographic review thirty articles were considered analysing the existing relation between the bisphosphonates and the development of maxillary osteonecrosis, risk factores and treatment alternatives. The results obtained in this research indicate that this pathology mainly affects female patients due to its predisposition to develop osteoporosis, for which the administration of this drug is necessary. This research also showed that the intravenous route of administration is the one with the highest risk and that the drug with the greatest influence to develop maxillary osteonecrosis is zoledronate. Demonstrating that the mandibular bone is the most affected with the administration of these drugs. Key words: Maxillary osteonecrosis, bisphosphonates, jawbone, bone resorption. |

Key words: Maxillary osteonecrosis, bisphosphonates, jawbone, bone resorption.Los bifosfonatos son fármacos que se utilizan para tratar enfermedades que afectan al tejido óseo, sin embargo, pueden causar complicaciones como osteonecrosis maxilar, caracterizada por la exposición de tejido óseo necrótico, que se desarrolla en pacientes que han recibido tratamientos dentales invasivos que implican manipulación ósea. En esta revisión bibliográfica se consideró 30 artículos, analizando la relación existente entre los bifosfonatos y el desarrollo de osteonecrosis maxilar, factores de riesgo y alternativas de tratamiento. Los resultados obtenidos en la investigación indican que esta patología afecta principalmente a pacientes de sexo femenino debido a su predisposición a desarrollar osteoporosis, por lo que es necesario la administración de este fármaco. Este estudio también mostró que la vía de administración endovenosa es la de mayor riesgo, y que el fármaco con mayor influencia a desarrollar osteonecrosis maxilar es el zoledronato. Demostrando que el hueso mandibular es el más afectado con la administración de estos fármacos.
