Riassunto:The prevalence of the COVID-19 pandemic has unexpectedly introduced negative and alarming impacts on the global energy sector. In total, electricity demand decreased by 20% or more, with an increase in residential consumption offset by lower demand in the industrial and commercial sectors. Therefore, the overall aim of the research is to assess the relationship between employment status and energy efficiency in Ecuadorian households during the COVID-19 pandemic, using econometric techniques to propose policies promoting good environmental practices in energy efficiency. Utilizing data from the Environmental Practices Behavior Survey conducted between August and November 2022, a discrete choice model, specifically logit, and a Propensity Score Matching model were applied to measure the relationship and causal effect of employment status and environmental behavior on energy efficiency, respectively. The main results highlight the significant influence of environmental concern, employment status, household head role, educational level, working hours, and income on pro-environmental practices in energy efficiency. Additionally, a causal effect was identified between environmental concern and employment status in such practices. Finally, to address this, implementing tax incentives for efficient technologies usage, creating awareness programs on responsible energy use, and reinforcing infrastructure to access renewable sources are suggested. These measures aim to enhance energy efficiency in Ecuadorian households and promote responsible practices to preserve the environment.
