總結:This investigation was carried out with children in their fifth-year of basic education, in the educational school “Graciela Atarihuana de Cueva” in the city of Loja during the period of 2015-2016. The first objective was to determine the visual acuity based on the table of Snellen. Other objectives were to identify the risk factor, the students´ prevalence in the reduction of visual acuity, and to know the frequency with which the parents took their children for ophthalmological monitoring according to the recommended schedule. The type of study was descriptive-transversal, because it measured the visual acuity through Snellen's table to 100 students in their fifth to seventh year of basic education. The risk factors were determined through surveys of parents of students with decreased visual acuity. The data was tabulated and analyzed. Of the 100 students evaluated, 41% had decreased visual acuity, 37% had visual impairment, and 12% had moderate visual impairment. The risk factors had greater impact in the families with a history of ophthalmological lenses use: (75.6%) eye infections, (56.10%) eye lesions, (41.46%) use of electronic devices (31%), and (24.39%) prematurity in a lower percentage. Only 12.20% of students with visual impairment had been taken by their parents for ophthalmological monitoring as advocated, which indicated the lack of knowledge regarding the importance of visual examination and its prevention of ocular pathologies. Key words: Risk factors, Visual acuity, Family history, Eye infections, Eye lesions, Prematurity, Ophthalmologic monitoring, Electronic devices.
